Governor Mike Pence

Mike Pence

Vice President of the Unites States

Governor Mike Pence is a lifelong Hoosier with legal, small business, and public policy experience. He was elected the 50th Governor of the State of Indiana in 2012 and inaugurated January 14, 2013. As our governor, Mike remains committed to guiding Indiana on a pathway to success through fiscal responsibility, economic development and educational opportunity for every Hoosier child.

Mike was born and raised in Columbus, Indiana, where he graduated from Columbus North High School. He graduated from Hanover College in 1981 and earned his J.D. from the Indiana University School of Law in 1986. Mike and his wife, First Lady Karen Pence, recently celebrated 31 years of marriage. They have three children: Michael, Charlotte and Audrey.

Since taking office in 2013, Mike has enacted the largest state tax cut in Indiana history while also eliminating the business personal property tax for Hoosier small businesses, and lowered the corporate income tax to strengthen Indiana’s competitive edge in attracting new investment and good paying jobs for Hoosiers.

And the results are clear: when Mike took office in January 2013, unemployment stood at 8.4%. Now, with a labor force growing at rates that exceed national averages and over 100,000 private sector jobs created, unemployment is down to under 5%.

As governor, Mike has made career and technical education a priority in every Indiana classroom, which aligns school curriculum with in-demand jobs. He has also expanded school choice, signed into law the first State pre-K program and has made unprecedented investments in our state’s K-12 education.

To expand healthcare options for Hoosiers, Mike created Indiana’s first consumer-driven Medicaid alternative – the proven Healthy Indiana Plan 2.0. This program, with the bipartisan support of members of Indiana’s General Assembly, provides access to an affordable health care plan that lets Hoosiers take charge of their health.

Roads mean jobs here in the Crossroads of America, and under his leadership, the state has invested more than $800 million in new money for roads and bridges in Indiana.

As governor, Mike has worked with the Indiana General Assembly to craft honestly balanced budgets that maintain strong reserves and continue to generate a surplus. This fiscal discipline has helped Indiana maintain its AAA credit rating and earn a global reputation as a great place to do business.

Mike’s duties as governor include managing the State of Indiana’s workforce of approximately 28,000 and a biennial budget of more than $30 billion. He oversees the duties of the executive branch as the state’s chief executive officer, recommends and reviews legislation with members of the Indiana General Assembly, and also serves as the commander-in-chief of the Indiana National Guard, the 4th largest unit of citizen-soldiers in the United States.

Prior to his election as our governor, Mike represented portions of eastern Indiana in the United States House of Representatives for more than a decade. During his time in Congress, Mike served in leadership roles as Chairman of the Republican Study Committee and Chairman of the House Republican Conference. As a Member of Congress, Mike developed a reputation as an advocate for limited government, fiscal discipline, a strong national defense, and traditional moral values.
